Reagan and I went on a field trip with Jocelyn and her Preschool class today! We went to a real working farm...Spring House Farm. I guess it's really a dairy farm because other than cows, the only animals I saw were a couple of pigs and two dogs.
The field trip started out on a school bus! This was exciting for the girls!
When we got to the farm, we were warned that cows aren't the best smelling creatures and that they have no shame in relieving themselves in front of a crowd. Boy were they right. It seemed that all those cows actually did was eat, pee and poo. Constantly. And being as large as they were, you really had to take a step back to make sure it wasn't splashing on you.
Jocelyn was interested in the cows. She observed, she listened, she offered what the farmer called "a profound statement"...that "those cows sure eat a lot". She learned a lot of facts about cows and really seemed to enjoy herself on this trip with her classmates.
She even milked a cow!
She seemed particularly interested to learn how the milk makes its way from the cow to the bottle.
Reagan loved the bus ride to the farm. Once we were there she wanted to be held. She is not a big fan of animals in general. They make her feel a little uneasy. The cows were huge, and dirty, and they really did stink. Reagan would look at them, but she must have a pretty sensitive nose when it comes to foul odor because she spent a lot of time with her nose pressed against my shoulder and saying, "uggggg"!
The one thing that BOTH girls seemed to enjoy was feeding the baby cows. Reagan actually fed the baby cow, but that was her limit of participation, especially when one of the calves escaped her pen. After that, she just wanted to eat her lunch and get back on the bus!
I would have to say that it was interesting to learn how the cows are milked and the process of pasteurization and bottling, but seeing and looking at the cows that make that milk that I put into my cereal every morning was kind of--for lack of a better term--yuck. They are really dirty and stinky. I really don't want to think about the smell of that farm while I'm eating my breakfast.
Overall, it was a fun trip for Jocelyn. Haha. The Spring House store was very cute, clean, and was not stinky at all. They had a lot of yummy-looking food for sale, and the ice cream cones we had for dessert were delicious. Reagan enjoyed her bus ride home!
